January is a special time of year. We not only start off a new year, but we all have goals and things we wish to accomplish as the new year kicks off and new hope is on the horizon. While often our goals are habit related, such as exercise more or eat better, there are also physical things in our lives that can become goals. For instance, what about all the stuff in your home? Is it time to declutter and get organized? If you want to give yourself a clean, fresh slate to start off the new year, decluttering your home is a great place to start.

The hardest part of this task is often figuring out where to begin. What do you truly need and what should you want to get rid of? Are your closets and drawers overflowing with stuff you seldom, if ever use or look for? Do you start with the small stuff, or start with the big stuff? The goal here is to take it one step at a time. To help you out, we’ve put together some great decluttering tips you can use to get your life in order and help you check off that first new year resolution.

Follow these tips to help clear out some space in your home and start your year off with a clean, organized space+.

1. Set a specific schedule for decluttering

One of the biggest hurdles when it comes to decluttering is actually finding the time to do it. Treat it as an appointment and pick a date ahead of time so you make sure you have time to spend on your decluttering project. Once you pick the date, make sure you stick to it!

2. Start with holiday clutter

As you put away your holiday decorations, take the time to seriously consider if there’s anything you can let go of. There are for sure at least a few items that you really don’t need to hang onto anymore. Set aside anything you want to get rid of as you go. Try to condense everything into a few boxes or storage containers to make it easier to find everything for next year.

3. Clear out any unwanted gifts or obsolete items to make room for new gifts

This one is a little tricky. Every year, it seems like there’s at least one gift that you just don’t quite know what to do with. We often end up holding onto these items because we feel guilty about it, but that’s not a great reason to keep clutter around. You can either give away these items to someone you know or donate them to a local charity so that someone else has a chance to enjoy them.

Additionally, as you are trying to find spaces to put new gifts, take into consideration old belongings that have become obsolete or unused that if cleared can make space for new things. Donating or recycling those items is a great way to make more space in your home as well.

4. Clear out your storage spaces and attic

It’s normal for storage spaces to slowly accumulate more clutter throughout the year. This is a fantastic place to look to for making big strides in decluttering your life. Set aside anything you no longer need and then carefully organize everything else as you put it away.

5. Clean (everything) as you go

If you’re clearing out these areas around your home, why not do a deep clean while you’re at it? It’s the perfect time to dust off those shelves, clean out the dust bunnies from behind the couch, and give everything a thorough wipe down. It’s a great way to (literally) make your home feel fresh for the new year. Take this on as you work room by room—when you pull everything out, give the area a good clean before you put everything back in.

6. Donate what you can

Once you’ve finished your initial round of decluttering, it’s time to actually get it out of your home. It’s a great opportunity to donate these items to a local charity. Just make sure you check with them first to make sure they are able to accept all your items, as some charities only take certain kinds of items.

7. Clear out the rest of your junk

After donations, you might still have a few items left behind. Some smaller items might be able to be picked up and hauled off. This is where the heavy lifting comes in. Many dumps and recycling centers have rules and regulations about what can be accepted and how and where it needs to be taken.
